Throughout chapter 12, we see a whole new Ponyboy. He isn't scared of the Socs, his grades are becoming awful, and he is almost emotionless. With the stress of the Hearing, the stress of school and fighting with Darry didn't help. His teacher offered him an extra chance to boost his dead grade through an essay about any topic, but he heavily procrastinates and gets in a fight with Darry and "playing tug of war" with Soda the entire time. Soda runs away and Pony and Darry chase him. After the catch him, they have a serious coversation about how they, as brothers, should stick together. Ponyboy then starts writing his essay which is ironically about the events of the whole book.
"I had only two things ony my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home..."
This quote is important because it is the first and last line of the novel, and shows that Ponyboy is writing about what happened throughout the novel.
