Victor felt bad for Sarah as they and Dor watched Sarah's afterlife. It was his turn, now. The trio watched Grace's reaction to her husband's frozen aftermath, and the guilt was overtaking Victor. They then visited the future to see Victor's disheveled body on display while blank people watched his memories, that were simple to the new generation. Dor told his story to Victor and Sarah, and, the disease Alli had picked up all those years ago was starting to overtake him because the world was frozen. The teenage girl and the elderly millionaire brought Dor to the mysterious man. Later, Dor reappeared to before the collapse of Nim's tower. Dor ran back to his house to be with Alli in their final moments. They then died together. Sarah and Victor were back to their normal lives and they were in the hospital. Before he had died, Victor paid an expensive tuition for Sarah to go to a medical school, where she learned how to cure Victor's illness.
Victor and Sarah were both very confused as to what happened and where they were. They decided to tell each other about themselves, and they turned out to both relate to each other. They then proceeded to question Dor about what was going on, but Dor was preoccupied with the stunning return of his ability to cough, sweat, and feel pain. Looking at Sarah, Dor wondered what his children turned out to be like. Dor showed Sarah how the people whom she was close with were affected by Sarah's death, which, according to Dor, helped Sarah heal as she started to feel remorse for her actions.
A desperate Sarah met up with Ethan at Dunkin Donuts and confessed her feelings. When Ethan didn't reciprocate or even react to what she said, she mentally broke. She then returned home, with a split heart. While drinking alcohol and listening to sad music, she went on to Facebook to try and apologize, and was shocked to see Ethan had posted about how crazy she was, and many replies agreed. Sadly, she turned to the dark path. She was going to take her life. Once her mother left for a party, she went to her garage and hopped into the car.
While Victor was prepping the files for when he would die, he started to get intense pangs of guilt for leaving Grace. In order to make things easier, He convinced Grace to go and present their annual donation at a New Year's Eve party. He kept dying, and felt worse and worse about his actions. Dor thought more and more about how the human race had progressed, but were never satisfied. When Sarah was in the process of ending her life, Dor screamed and tried to save her. He carried the dying girl to the freezing cylinder storage warehouse, and brought Victor there as well while he tried to think of what to do. He then put their hands on the hourglass and stopped time completely. "A heart weighs more when it splits in two; it crashes the chest like a broken plane." This quote tells how a broken heart makes life slower and harder to live with. Things were awkward at the soup kitchen with Sarah and Ethan. Sarah then decided to go to New York City to get a watch for Ethan. Sarah then heard about what was supposedly going to be the end of the world. When she got to the shop, she rambled for ten minutes about her view on her and Ethan's "relationship" to Dor. Sarah was surprised to find out that Dor was patiently listening to her whole story, and then found the watch she wanted to get for Ethan. Later, Sarah returned to the shop and asked for Dor (specifically) to engrave the watch to say "Time flies with you". Afterwards, she called Ethan and told him to meet her at Dunkin Donuts.
I don't think this will end well... Victor visited a clock shop in New York City. He wanted to buy the oldest timepiece they had, no matter the cost. Dor found a timepiece made in 1784 for Victor to purchase when it was prepared. Later, he met with his lawyers and discussed his money and possessions and what would happen to them when he died. He then saw Dor sitting on a ledge of a building staring into his window. He declared he would be gone by New Year's Eve. While at the hospital going through the normal routine, he saw a shadow (Dor) which promptly disappeared. When Victor returned to his office, he was shocked to see Dor standing, waiting for him. Victor was shocked, but Dor gave him the prepared timepiece. At the shop, Dor said Victor was from France, so the curious Victor questioned Father Time, asking how he knew. Dor then replied: "I heard you ask for something when you were a child. Then, as know, you wanted time". Victor was shocked, and then Dor vanished. The rich man decided to tell his wife he wanted to "pull the plug", as one might say. Dor continued to discover mankind's new inventions. He decided to work at a clock shop in New York City, where he formally met Victor Delamonte and Sarah Lemon. He carefully listened to Sarah and analyzed Victor. Every evening, Dor would sit on the ledges at the top of skyscrapers, where he saw Victor discussing plans with his lawyers. He seemed to be planning how he would help Sarah and Victor in the way he was told to. Lorraine was at a strip mall and reminisced about her used-to-be close relationship with Sarah. Later on, Ethan brought vodka over to Sarah's house, and some sketchy decisions were made. The next morning, Sarah decided to buy a watch for Ethan.
Grace was at the supermarket buying healthy food for herself and Victor. Victor invited Jed over to his house to discuss his freezing. He cannot be legally allowed to be frozen unless he is confirmed dead. Victor wants to be frozen at least a couple hours from death, so there is a better chance he'll live to be thawed out. Dor appeared in a small Spanish town, and learned he could freeze time with a mysterious hourglass. He discovered cars and studied them for hours. He went to a museum and analyzed the different types of clocks, and tried on different clothes and jackets at a store. He finally saw his reflection after thousands of years, and then he decided to cut his long beard and hair. He also taught himself to read and was amazed at electricity. He then swam across the Atlantic Ocean in one minute, and made it to New York City. Sarah didn't recover from the previous night's events, and she tried to act natural at the soup kitchen with Ethan. Later on, though, he desperation got the best of her mind, as she accepted another offer from Ethan.
I'm beginning to sense a pattern here... Victor was taught about the process of freezing oneself from a man named Jed. Victor was drifting away from his wife, and was willing to go through the freezing process alone, while Grace was trying her best to help Victor through the struggle and tough times, while Victor was plotting something private from her. Dor started to draw on the walls of the cave. He drew all of his cherished memories, which mostly consists of Alli. A stalagmite and stalactite in the cave finally met after six thousand years, which represented heaven meeting earth. The old man returned to Dor, and set him free and sent him back down to earth with a mission: help two lost souls and teach what he knows about time. The three stories will clearly link together soon... We learn a LOT more about Sarah and Victor in these chapters.
As it turns out, Sarah Lemon is an insecure and lonely teenager who likes to sit by herself. She believes the only thing that matters in life is popularity, and that she doesn't fit in. Sarah is supposedly "too smart" for everyone else, which put her into her current social position. The boy she is preparing to meet with is named Ethan, a popular kid. Sarah volunteers at a soup kitchen, which is where she truly met Ethan. She creepily started believing that Ethan was her "destiny" and that they were meant to be together. She believed Ethan felt the same way about herself that she did Ethan. By chapter 22, Ethan texts Sarah telling her he cannot make it. Sarah replied optimistically, as if she was feeling perfectly fine, which she definitley wasn't. As it turns out, Victor Delamonte is the fourteenth richest man in the world. At an early age, his father was killed, and his mother took her own life soon afterwards. He then joined his uncle on a voyage to American, and after getting his food stolen, he learned to never get too attached to things, which clearly made him the businessman he is today. His financial ascent started with the purchase of two pinball machines, which he later sold, and bought three candy dispensers with the profit, and a sell and a buy later, he has five cigarette machines. By the end of college, he owned a company, and bought a gas station that gain lots of money due to tactful business decisions. Victor then met Grace in an elevator, and their relationship blossomed from there. They were later married and enjoyed life together through tennis, museum visits, and trips to other countries. Unfortunately, as the years went on, the fun times stopped when Victor's business became top priority. Originally told he'd only have a few moths left to live, but he finally received information on immortality. Cryonics - freezing oneself to be brought back later. Dor tells Alli they have to leave, which isn't easy for Alli to take in. While his wife is crying, Dor proceeds to create the worlds first clock. They move very far away to the high plains, where Dor continues to make clocks of some kind. Dor's parents would occasionally visit, but not often. The couple was then visited by a banished elderly couple, who had weird blotches on their skin that Dor was worried. Dor warned her against it, but Alli touched them. Later on, Alli got the dark blotches as well, and eventually died, despite Dor's attempts to ask the gods for assistance. Dor, with nothing left, raced to Nim's tower all the way up to the peak, despite being chased. Once he reached the top, he appeared in the cave he lives in now.
Sarah continues to stress and prepare for her date throughout the chapter. Victor wants to research immortality. It turns out what Victor has is cancer, and its getting worse. He waits very impatiently to have immortality research faxed to him, and at the end of the chapter, it is. The novel begins with a very old man sitting alone in a cave. He was supposedly banished to said cave and listens to everyone's pleas for more time. Later, he is shown as a little kid named Dor, running with his friends Nim and Alli, the latter of which he has slight romantic feelings towards. Dor is different from everyone else, as he is the first person to count and keep track of things through numbers. The story later cuts to Dor as a teenager, experimenting with a rock, stick, and a shadow to calculate time. He realizes the shadow created by the sun will be in the same place at the same time every day. Just then, he shoos a fly that turns into an old man, who destroys Dor's experiment, not before Dor named it "Alli Moment". Later on, Dor and Alli get married, and Nim becomes a king. Nim understands that Dor is smart, but is called crazy. Nim doesn't think Dor is crazy, and he wants Dor to join him on his mission to "battle the gods". Dor, knowing that is impossible, declines the offer, and Nim replies by telling him that if he isn't going to help, he should leave for his and Alli's safety, as they could be captured by those who oppose Dor.
Sarah Lemon is a teenage girl who is stressed about her upcoming date, and wishes she had more time to prepare. Her mother is divorced, and Sarah took her side. The first seven chapters mainly have Sarah deciding on what to wear the date. Victor Delamonte, a rick man in his mid-eighties, is quite close to the end of his life due to medical problems. He rejects the offering of an electric wheelchair, and refuses to feel powerless to it. He is mainly worried about how much time he has left to live, which he still doesn't know. |
